How Chocolate Is Made

Organic or Not?

There are many foods that you can find at the supermarket that are organic. Organic apples, organic oranges, organic tomatoes... etcetera, etcetera. But did you know that chocolate can be made organically too? It is made organic by using organic cocoa beans. If the cocoa beans are not organic, there will be lots of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides used on the cacao trees. But, of course, organic chocolate is always better.

100% organic chocolate is created when no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides are used on the cacao trees. The organic percentage is based on how many chemicals are used on the plant. It is pretty hard to get organic cocoa beans though, because many cacao trees cannot resist pests without using chemicals. That is why most chocolate companies use non-organic cocoa beans. There are many diseases and pests that affect the cacao tree, so most of them need the chemicals to survive and to produce good cocoa beans. That is why it would be pretty hard to get 100% organic cocoa beans.
